5 Key Bridal Trends from the S/S22 Runways

Our trend team at The Story Of. were on the ground throughout the S/S22 season to deliver an industry exclusive Key Trends Bridal report from New York, London, Paris and Milan.

The bridal scene is changing and many fashion-lead brides are increasingly turning to RTW for their big day in lieu of a traditional bridal boutique experience. On the runway for S/S22, designers are responding to the flux with a range of wedding-ready looks that you can wear on your big day and beyond. TSO rounds up all the key bridal trends you need to know from the RTW runways.

THE NEW ROMANTICS

The Story Of

Romance was well and truly back on the cards for S/S22, with a wealth of designers willing and ready to serve the contemporary bride seeking a modern take on this traditional story. At Louis Vuitton, dramatic looks came inspired by a 19th century costume drama, offering up billowing capes, delicate laces and statement skirting. Elsewhere, romance in the hands of Alexander Mc Queen saw delicate corsetry, dense crystal embellishments and shredded tulles serving a side helping of dishabille. Cecilie Bahnsen continues to serve up her dreamy, cloud-like silhouettes, tamed this season with tapered waistlines for a flattering finish.

The Styling

Layers of lace, shredded tulle, historic corsetry, delicate embroidery, statement veils, semi-sheers and plenty of volume

The Accessories

Brocade chokers, pearlescent clutch bags, chunky boots or statement sculpted heels

SERENE & SIMPLE

The Story Of

One for the minimalists among us; plentiful clean lines, purist details and paired back – yet elevated – materials were spotted throughout the season, signalling a fresh start and an oh-so-chic take on bridal outfitting. Jil Sander epitomises the look with their take on elegant two-piece dressing, while Dior and Alberta Ferreti take on the trend with clean lines, contemporary cut-outs and beautiful backless detailing. At Gabriela Hearst, an accordion style sleeve lends a statement flare to a simple straight silk dress.

The Styling

Paired back and classic; two-piece dressing offers multi-wear possibilities after the big day, while the absence of any fuss or frills will leave you plenty of room to focus on partying

The Accessories

Keep it simple; slick back hair do’s and sculptural, statement jewellery stands in lieu of a veil.

ALL OUT GLAMOUR

The Story Of

The very antithesis of minimalism, in all it’s outrageous glory! This is for the bride who’s not afraid of going bold. A touch of 80’s glamour comes served with strong shoulders at Saint Laurent and Alexandre Vauthier, while decadent feature textures and glimmers of gold turn up the tempo at Ermanno Scervino and London’s Sharon Wauchob. On our radar is Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi, who’s clouds of densely ruffled tulle are sure to turn heads.

The Styling

Bold shoulders, nipped in waistlines and plenty of texture. Big sleeves are key to the look – take note of Vivienne Westwood’s statement silk renditions and nipped in waistline as a silhouette reference.

The Accessories

More is more. Bold costume jewellery or angular sunglasses will make for a couture-esque spin

THE BOHEME BRIDE

The Story Of

As destination weddings become all the more tangible, true boheme washes up beachy sea shells, holiday crochets, soft pleats, patchwork and laid back linens. Chloe’s serene outing by the Seine embodies this Summer ready look, while accessories at Altuzarra will look just as good on honeymoon as they do down the aisle.

The Styling

Think roomy, unstructured shapes, layered with textured, artisanal surfaces and embroideries evocative of the natural world. Hair down and natural, or sea-salted beach waves and glowing ‘no-make-up-make-up’ face.

The Accessories

Beach-shells and organic forms that are weather beaten and sand stricken. Simple sandals will embody the relaxed spirit of this boheme mood.

THE FUTURIST

The Story Of

Futurism was a key trend cited throughout the season, making for plenty of sleek bridal looks with a forward-thinking edge. Otherworldly, curvilinear lines and abstract forms meet specced-up materials like hammered satin or iridescent sheers. Akris’s precise pleats lend the look a neat, tailored edge, while the weird and wonderful world of Rick Owens presents bridalwear at its most avant garde.

The Styling

Contemporary capes and sleek cut outs meet square toe heels and tough yet simplistic jewellery. Wear hair slick and ask your MUA for a glossy eye and deep lip. Skinny strap details are en vogue, wear styled around the neck like Jonohan Simkhai

The Accessories

Think Bottega Veneta style shoes and angular, modernist metal jewellery.
